Signs of Life
February 9 – April 5, 2012
February 9th – April 5th, 2012 - New York, New York – enter:gallery is proud to present new work by Jenny Odell in a solo exhibition titled Signs of Life.  The series is comprised of found imagery from Google Earth, clustered into delicate arrangements.  The opening reception will be held on Thursday evening, February 9th, 2012, 7:00 – 9:00 pm at enter:gallery, 60-62 E 11th St. 3rd Floor.  Food and drinks will be provided.
Jenny Odell is like a researcher investigating the topographical landscape of the Earth, its inhabitants, and their behavior.  In Signs of Life, she continues in her methods of categorizing and grouping detailed Google Earth images, but focuses in more on the human language, structure, and systems that are visible to satellite imagery.  Using Google Earth’s recently added 45-degree angle view, Odellgroups together text and logo filled billboards and signs.  Signs of Life is a deeper investigation not only into how humans communicate through advertisement, but the physical structures that are made and maintained for this reason.
Jenny Odell is a graphic artist hailing from the Bay Area.  Her work has been exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Google Headquarters, and Les Rencontres D’Arles in France.  She has also been featured in KQED’s Gallery Crawl, the NPR Picture Show, Pop-up Magazine, Rhizome, Gizmodo, Design Sponge, and ESPN Magazine, plus many publications abroad.  Please visit www.jennyodell.com.

Fair Chase
October 13th – January 19th, 2012

October 13th – January 19th, 2012 New York, New York – enter:gallery is pleased to announce its third exhibition, featuring the work of Wesley Berg. The series, Fair Chase, is comprised of large charcoal drawings, depicting various natural poses and actions of bears. The opening reception will be Thursday evening, October 13th, 7:00 – 9:00 pm at enter:gallery, 60-62 E 11th St. 3rd Floor, between Broadway and University Place. Food and drinks will be provided.

In Fair Chase, Wesley Berg expands on an earlier series dealing with bear hunting and its implications. Finding a close connection between the presence of the bear and that of the human, Berg simplifies his imagery to a more important form; that of the presence of the life-size bear. Due to his personal communion with and exploration of remote and uninhabited places, Berg seeks to understand the relationship between the human and the nature in an increasingly modernized world. As a result, Fair Chase confronts the viewer with the power and beauty of nature in the midst of the controlled urban metropolis.

Wesley Berg is a MFA graduate from the University of Florida. He has exhibited in international galleries, and has participated in multiple residencies around the world. Wesley Berg is currently living and working in Santa Fe, NM. Please visit www.wesleyberg.com

Social Media & David Byrne’s Tight Spot exhibit at The Pace Gallery
Unfortunately it’s about to end, but I hope all of you have heard about (or visited!) David Byrne’s installation under the Highline, titled Tight Spot.  Talking Heads co-founder David Byrne is a legend, not only for influential music, but also for his lifestyle and conceptual art.  Byrne’s latest installation is an enormous inflated globe crammed into a small space under the grand industrial High Line.  The work emanates Byrne’s own distorted voice- a low, cavernous drone as if you’re hearing the groanings of the architectureal space itself (similar to Byrne’s earlier piece Playing the Building).  You can visit Tight Spot at 508 W 25th St., up through October 1.
On that note, I REALLY want to highlight the complimentary exhibition that The Pace Gallery has up right now, titled Social Media.  This exhibit, jointly curated by the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department at the School of Visual Arts, is on view at 510 W 25th St. from September 16 through October 15, 2011.  Social Media also features a work by David Byrne, along with Miranda July & Harrell Fletcher, Christopher Baker, Aram Bartholl, Jonathan Harris, Robert Heinecken, Sep Kamvar, and Penelope Umbrico.
This show is one of the first collections of work I’ve seen capturing this point of history concerning social media. I think it’s really relevant to start looking for this type of emerging art.  Andy Warhol & Ed Ruscha’s work represent the effect that advertising and mass production had on the world, and in a similar way artists who examine these new(ish) forms of communication and technology will continue to show up and potentially serve as a commentary for the point in time in which we’re living.

July 14 – September 30, 2011

New York, New York – enter:gallery is proud to present its second solo exhibition titled “Natural History” by photographer Michael Vahrenwald. Natural History is composed of excerpts from Vahrenwald’s series (Forest Floor, Methods & Receiver, Universal Default, and Plant Drawings), centralizing on the intersection of nature and human advancement.
